Fort Lagarde at Prats de Mollo
The symbol of royal power...

In 1659, the Treaty of the Pyrenees led to the annexation of part of Roussillon to the kingdom of France. Prats de Mollo became a border fortress.
Dominating the town, Fort Lagarde was destined to protect the new frontier and to watch over the entrance to High Vallespir.
The monument is built following the conception of fortress strengthening, developed by Vauban, in order to resist enemy artillery. It is perfectly adapted to the mountains.
Access to the monument is by a pathway or galleries (15 mins on foot), or by special bus leaving from the Tourist Office.
Many possibilities are open to you: Private visits, guided tours, story-telling visits, shows and visits. Contact us for information!
